The Adventure!
Dressing Room Door Wow! Was Mae West Here? Rehearsal Table Voila!
It had already been a long day traveling from Austin to Burbank, then from the airport to the hotel, but the day was only half over. When I arrived at the studio, it was clear from the beginning that Carol Duvall takes her role as host seriously. The enthusiastic and friendly staff treat their guest artists as if they were family. And what a happy surprise to learn I was to share the dressing room with an acquaintance, polymer artist Barbara McGuire, also there to tape a segment for the show. With its gilt walls and satin settee, the dressing room took a bit of getting used to, but it's Hollywood! Besides being a private place to return to during rehearsal breaks, it became a nice place to learn about the show. Through a closed-circuit TV, I watched as live performances were taped and edited. Informative, it made me aware of staging and actions that assured a segment would run smoothly. Of course, most of the time prior to my segment wasn't spent in the dressing room. I spent most of the time back stage... Most of the second day was spent right here, at my rehearsal table. Five other guests had tables along side, each rehearsing projects, each coached by a Segment Producer. Mine was Cam Frierson. This wonderful woman coached me on how to cue the camera operators, cajoled when things went wrong, and encouraged me when they went right. The goal was to take all the little mouse parts and assemble a mouse in exactly 11 minutes as described in my book. Whew! Finally we had it just right, thanks to her. After six hours of rehearsing for the show, the final star appears! Not me, the 11-minute mouse :) The picture was taken by Rich Shelby, another guest on the show who was rehearsing his segment on decorating clocks in his distinctive fashion. What a talented man!
Coach Cam Frierson Stage 1 Door Show Time
What more can I say about this talented lady. Segment Producer, performing artist in her own right, and mousekateer! Thank you Cam. Peeking through the stage door. Almost time to go. Let's see, do I have everything? Lights, camera, action! Thank you for a very pleasant stay, Carol. You're a wonderful host who cares about your guests and cared about me.
